Saeima approves 30-meter protective zone along Latvia's external border
On Thursday, June 11, the Saeima adopted urgent amendments to the Protective Zone Law in the final reading, establishing a 30-meter protective zone along Latvia's external land border to enhance security and facilitate infrastructure maintenance.

To bolster border security and ensure the upkeep of border infrastructure, Latvia's parliament has approved a 30-meter protective zone along the country's external land border. The urgent amendments to the Protective Zone Law were passed in the final reading on Thursday, June 11, as announced by the Saeima Press Service.
The new regulations create a restricted area along the border where economic activities will be limited to ease the work of border guards and the maintenance of facilities such as fences, roads, and surveillance systems. The decision was made on an expedited basis, underscoring its importance for national security.
This measure is part of broader efforts to strengthen Latvia's external border, particularly given the current geopolitical context. The 30-meter width was chosen to provide sufficient space for patrolling as well as for the construction and repair of necessary infrastructure.
Lawmakers supported the amendments unanimously, citing the need for effective border protection. In the coming months, the specific rules for implementing the protective zone will be refined, taking into account the interests of landowners and local municipalities.
