Calls Grow for Snap Election in Romania as Government Crisis Drags On
Romanian President Nicușor Dan has tasked diplomat Luca Niculescu with trying to form a government. He is the fourth prime ministerial candidate in five months, and calls for fresh elections are growing.

Romania's political crisis continues. On 5 October, President Nicușor Dan asked diplomat Luca Niculescu to try to break the deadlock and form a government in Bucharest. Niculescu is the fourth candidate for prime minister in just five months.
Parliament rejected the previous nominee
Shortly before that, on 30 September, parliament rejected the previous prime ministerial nominee. The vote deepened the crisis, and a snap election has now become possible.
The president's concerns
The centrist president, Dan, does not want such a vote. In his assessment, an election could risk handing power to the far right. He is therefore trying once more to find a solution without sending voters back to the polls.
At the same time, calls for fresh elections are growing in the country. They come as efforts to form a government have repeatedly failed.
