Romania destroys two Russian drones found near key gas field in the Black Sea

Romania's armed forces spotted two uncrewed aircraft floating in the Black Sea close to the country's flagship gas field and moved quickly to destroy them.

Before acting, the military reached out to Ukrainian authorities to determine the origin of the devices. Kyiv confirmed the drones were not Ukrainian, leading Romanian forces to conclude they were of Russian origin and proceed with destroying them.

Proximity to critical energy infrastructure

The discovery near Romania's principal gas field raised concern given the strategic importance of offshore gas production to the country's energy security. Any unidentified aerial device near such infrastructure is treated as a serious matter by Romanian authorities.

Part of a wider pattern

Romania, a NATO member bordering the Black Sea and located near Ukraine, has repeatedly encountered Russian drones or drone debris entering its territory or waters in recent years. Such incidents are widely linked to Russia's ongoing war against Ukraine and its strikes on Ukrainian port infrastructure near the shared border.
