Rubio: War in Ukraine will end through negotiations, not military victory
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there is currently no energy ceasefire deal between Ukraine and Russia, and that the war will end not through a military victory by either side but through a negotiated agreement.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in an interview with radio station WABC that there is currently no energy ceasefire agreement between Ukraine and Russia. He noted that the war benefits neither side, making its end a logical goal, though he acknowledged that in foreign policy the logical outcome does not always materialize.
Rubio said US President Donald Trump has stated that Washington remains ready to act whenever an opportunity arises to improve the situation and bridge the differences between the two sides.
Negotiations, not a battlefield outcome
Rubio expressed confidence that Russia's war against Ukraine will not end with a crushing military victory for either side. Instead, he said, the conflict will conclude through an agreement reached at the negotiating table. The sooner that happens, he added, the fewer lives will be lost and the less destruction there will be.
The statement follows earlier reports that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the United States would pass Ukraine's energy ceasefire proposal on to Russia for consideration.
