Rubio Warns Ukraine War Could Grow Into a Much Wider Regional Conflict

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio says the war in Ukraine has reached a stalemate that could tempt one or both sides to escalate. He cautioned that this might quickly spark a far broader conflict in the region.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that the war between Russia and Ukraine has hit a deadlock in which one or both sides might choose to escalate in an attempt to break out of the impasse.

Speaking during a visit to Portugal, Rubio said any escalation between Moscow and Kyiv could quickly turn a war between two countries into a much wider and far more dangerous regional conflict. He described the war as extremely dangerous because, in his words, it now appears to be stuck, and stalemates are very dangerous since both sides may feel tempted to intensify the situation.

Attack in Kramatorsk

The warning came after a Russian strike on two public transport buses in Kramatorsk. Thirty people were killed in the attack on Thursday, one of the bloodiest single attacks in recent weeks.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky promised that the attack would not go unanswered.

Efforts at negotiation

Rubio said attempts had already been made to reach a solution through talks, and he pledged to continue those efforts. He did not outline specific next steps.
