Tool lets users strip Apple Intelligence features from macOS 27
A developer has released an open-source command-line tool called RemoveMacAI that lets macOS 27 users remove Apple Intelligence features without disabling system security protections. The tool has already gathered 1,700 stars on GitHub.
A new open-source tool called RemoveMacAI has emerged, allowing macOS 27 users to quickly disable Apple Intelligence features they don't want on their machines.
According to the tool's developer, who explained the process on Reddit, RemoveMacAI works through a configuration profile that users approve themselves in System Settings, combined with Apple's own asset delivery service. This means System Integrity Protection remains active throughout, and nothing inside the /System directory is touched directly.
Should a user want to reverse the changes, running "removemacai revert" removes the installed profile, after which macOS re-downloads the relevant AI models once a feature is switched back on. The developer also noted that users can selectively remove individual Apple Intelligence features they dislike while keeping others intact.
Several Reddit users have reported that the tool functions as described, and as of this writing it has accumulated 1,700 stars on its GitHub repository.
Mixed reactions
The interest surrounding RemoveMacAI points to a degree of resistance among some users toward some or all Apple Intelligence features, even as Apple continues to lean heavily into AI-driven upgrades across its computers and other devices.
One Hacker News commenter compared the situation to the "de-crufting" routine long associated with fresh Windows installations, suggesting that macOS has now reached a similar point where third-party scripts are needed to reclaim control over system resources from unwanted built-in features.
While many users are content to use Apple Intelligence as delivered, RemoveMacAI offers a straightforward way for others to regain the kind of control over these features that Apple itself used to provide.
