At the end of last week, the State Police, in cooperation with the Riga Municipal Police and the Road Traffic Safety Directorate, carried out planned preventive road safety checks across the Riga region in Latvia. In total, 18,854 vehicles were inspected, 171 administrative violation cases were opened and 14 criminal proceedings were launched. Officers identified 35 cases of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The checks took place on Friday and Saturday in Riga, Ogre, the Ķegums area, Jūrmala, Olaine, Ķekava, Piņķi and Ulbroka.

Violations detected

Officers found several types of violations: driving with alcohol levels up to 1.5 per mille, driving without a licence, speeding, aggressive driving, insufficient tyre tread depth, prohibited window tinting and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Of the 171 administrative cases, 21 were for drink driving. Nine vehicles had their technical inspection annulled, and six cars had their registration plates removed.

Criminal proceedings

All 14 criminal cases were opened for drink driving. They involve drivers with more than 1.5 per mille of alcohol, drivers who drove under the influence without the right to drive, or drivers who refused an alcohol test.

Additional cases

During routine traffic supervision outside the planned checks, police in the Riga region found seven more cases of driving under the influence. Three led to administrative proceedings and four to criminal cases.

The State Police reminded drivers not to get behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances, to observe speed limits and to adjust speed to weather conditions. It said it will continue stepped-up checks and use the technical means available to detect violations.
