Jānis Streičs' paintings on display at the Riga Latvian Society

An exhibition of artworks by Jānis Streičs is currently on view at the Riga Latvian Society. Streičs, best known for his work as a film director, resumed active painting around 2000. In the following years, he regularly took part in exhibitions and worked with Lithuanian artists. After the film "Rūdolfa mantojums" (2010), his daily life shifted considerably, as he increasingly devoted himself to oil painting and brushes. Landscapes became the main focus of his painting.

The display at the Riga Latvian Society offers a look at this later stage of his creative career. The works on show reflect his move away from filmmaking toward a more solitary artistic process. His comment "When inspiration comes, I pick up a brush" captures this period, during which he concentrated on canvas and color. The paintings demonstrate his engagement with nature and the surrounding environment, executed in oil.

Since the early 2000s, Streičs continued to produce art on a regular basis, and the exhibition at the Riga Latvian Society is dedicated to this chapter of his work. It gives audiences the chance to appreciate how the director, long associated with cinema, found a different means of expression. The show also confirms how important painting had become to him after his years of making films.
