Red Bull admits it will struggle to keep up development pace in second half of season
Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies says the team's rapid progress in the first half of the season will be hard to sustain, citing F1's budget cap and the need to focus resources on next year's car.
Formula 1 team Red Bull, based in Milton Keynes, has significantly closed the gap to the championship leaders since the start of the season. While the deficit stood at 1.3 seconds per lap in Australia, it has shrunk to just 0.2–0.3 seconds in recent races. This progress came through major upgrade packages introduced in Miami and Austria, which substantially reshaped the car's aerodynamics and reduced its weight.
A tougher second half ahead
Heading into the summer break, team principal Laurent Mekies openly acknowledged that maintaining this pace of development in the second half of the season will be difficult. He pointed to F1's $215 million budget cap as a key constraint on further intensive upgrades. According to Mekies, the team has poured enormous resources into the car since the first race in order to close its initial deficit as quickly as possible, but keeping up the same rate of progress going forward is unrealistic. Still, the team hopes to find a way to close the remaining roughly three-tenths of a second gap.
Balancing this year and next
Budget constraints also mean Red Bull must decide how to split resources between this year's car and next season's design. Mekies revealed the team is taking a different approach this year compared to last season, when it committed fully to the fight until the very end, a decision that came at the cost of a weaker start the following year. This time, Red Bull plans to shift focus toward next year's project earlier. Mekies stressed that a decision on balancing the two seasons will need to be made, and he expects it to come sooner than last year, given the current regulations.
