Mercedes are bracing for a strong challenge from McLaren this weekend at the flowing Sepang circuit, where the track's characteristics are expected to suit the world champions' car. The team has brought its first major upgrade in some time, hoping it will help them get back into contention.

George Russell admitted he had not previously felt capable of fighting for race wins because his performances weren't strong enough. He said he now finally feels in a position to challenge for victory on a weekly basis, acknowledging the championship deficit remains large but noting a third of the season is still left to play out.

Russell began the year as title favourite, but teammate Kimi Antonelli took the early initiative as Russell worked to adapt to Mercedes' car built for this year's new chassis and engine regulations. He said the adjustments to his driving style, which initially required conscious effort, have now become more natural and intuitive.

Antonelli's tough weekend

Antonelli endured a difficult weekend in Baku, crashing in qualifying and starting 16th before recovering to finish fifth. He called it his worst weekend of the season but said the experience taught him the importance of always giving his full effort.

Hamilton defends Vasseur

Lewis Hamilton declared that Frederic Vasseur is the right man to lead Ferrari, two days after the team issued an unusual public statement backing him amid speculation about his position. Hamilton, currently third in the drivers' standings, said replacing Vasseur would be a mistake and pointed to the progress Ferrari has made this season compared with last year, despite the team's engine still trailing those of Mercedes and Red Bull.
