WHO: Existing Ebola vaccine may also protect against rarer strain in DR Congo
Early data, particularly from animal trials, suggests the Ervebo vaccine — already proven safe and effective against the common Zaire Ebola strain — may also offer some protection against the rarer Bundibugyo strain currently spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
An Ebola outbreak caused by the rarer Bundibugyo strain of the virus is currently spreading in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Ervebo vaccine, widely used and already confirmed safe and effective against the more common Zaire strain, has not been formally validated against Bundibugyo.
However, World Health Organization experts say early data — notably from animal trials — indicate the vaccine may offer some degree of protection against this rarer strain as well. If confirmed, this could mean an already-available vaccine could be deployed more broadly to help contain the current outbreak.
