Trauma expert: Israelis mourn their losses yet show resilience
Dr. Danny Brom, founder of the METIV psychotrauma center in Jerusalem, says Israelis' collective sense of security has been shattered, but that resilience exists alongside the grief. He notes that the war is still going on.
On France 24, presenter Angela Diffley spoke with Dr. Danny Brom, who founded and directs METIV, the Israel Psychotrauma Center in Jerusalem. The conversation focused on how Israelis and Jewish people around the world are coping with loss.
Grief and a shattered sense of safety
Brom noted that Israelis and Jewish communities worldwide continue to mourn the largest loss of Jewish life on a single day since the Holocaust. In his view, their fundamental sense of collective security has been broken as well.
Resilience alongside mourning
What strikes him most, however, is that resilience exists alongside the grieving. The discussion asked how individuals, communities and society as a whole can rebuild a sense of safety without allowing fear to dictate the future.
The war goes on
Brom stressed that the war is still going on. At the same time, political leaders speak of pursuing the "ultimate victory," which, as he put it, no one really knows the meaning of.
