Prosecutors Used ChatGPT Logs as Evidence in LA Wildfire Arson Trial

In the trial for a devastating New Year's Day 2025 wildfire in Los Angeles, prosecutors introduced ChatGPT logs as evidence, but the jury deadlocked 10-2 in favor of the defense, leading to a mistrial.

Terrence O'Brien of The Verge reports on the case of Jonathan Rinderknecht, who faced arson charges for starting a fire on New Year's Day 2025 that became one of the deadliest wildfires in LA history. To build their case, prosecutors used location data from his iPhone, security camera footage, and witness testimony. They also turned to his ChatGPT logs.

Prosecutors said Rinderknecht used ChatGPT to generate images of fire, asked the chatbot, "Why am I so angry all the time?", and ranted about the wealthy destroying the world. They also pointed to a screen recording where Rinderknecht asked ChatGPT whether someone could be blamed for a fire started by their cigarette.

However, the jury was not convinced. The trial ended in a deadlock when the jury voted 10-2 in favor of the defense, prompting the judge to declare a hung jury and a mistrial.

One juror told CBS LA that she didn't believe the ChatGPT logs proved anything, stating, "I talk to ChatGPT all the time." She said she was actually "angry" that prosecutors suggested his use of the chatbot indicated a character flaw.
