'Not Nigel Farage': Who Is Count Binface, the Satirical Candidate Taking on Farage in Clacton?

Count Binface, a comedian known for his trash-can helmet and absurd promises, has become the only challenger to Nigel Farage in the Clacton by-election, which critics call a stunt to delay a funding inquiry.

Nigel Farage, leader of the far-right Reform UK party, announced his resignation as MP for Clacton this week—only to stand again for the same seat, triggering a by-election. Critics have slammed the move as a stunt to delay a parliamentary inquiry into a funding scandal. All major parties refused to field candidates, leaving Farage alone until satirical candidate Count Binface entered the race.

Count Binface is the political persona of comedian Jon Harvey, known for his rubbish-can-shaped helmet and outlandish campaign promises. He describes himself as a "5,900-year-old intergalactic space warrior" and leader of the "Recyclons." Binface has stood in at least six elections since 2019, including against Boris Johnson in 2019, Rishi Sunak in 2024, and in the 2021 London mayoral race, where he received over 24,000 votes, finishing ninth.

His policy proposals range from abolishing the House of Lords and renaming London Bridge "Phoebe Waller-Bridge" to banning cellphone speakerphone use in public and eating noisy snacks in cinemas. He also promises to cap the price of a 99 Flake ice cream at 99 pence. For the Clacton race, Binface says he is a "unity candidate" and pledges to "build at least one affordable house," referencing the housing crisis.

While Binface's victory is highly unlikely, it would be an unprecedented upset and a major blow to Reform UK. Finance Minister Rachel Reeves called the by-election a "farce and a desperate distraction" but did not block it. Binface acknowledged his slim chances but told The Guardian he wanted "to celebrate and defend the wonders of British democracy" and has received a deluge of offers from supporters to help his campaign.
