Porsche unveils Mission S concept, a mid-engined supercar positioned above the 911
German automaker Porsche has shown the Mission S concept, which points to a new mid-engined supercar platform above the 911. The company describes it as a permanent addition to its range rather than a one-off hypercar.

German sports car maker Porsche has presented the Mission S concept car, which previews the company's future design direction and points to a new mid-engined supercar platform (with the engine placed behind the cabin). The model would sit above the company's 911.
A Porsche representative, Leiters, said the Mission S offers a glimpse of ideas and design features that will shape the brand's cars in the coming years. He stressed that it is not a one-off hypercar but a permanent and versatile part of the customer lineup.
Design
The exterior styling nods to earlier Porsches, including the 917, 928, 959 and GT1. The Ars Technica author notes that from some angles the concept also recalls the Aston Martin One-77 and the BMW i8.
The interior draws on the company's early history, namely the 356 and 550 Spyder. Porsche emphasizes the driver experience, combining haptic and digital feedback. The car has neither a passenger display nor a central infotainment screen. Instead, a smartphone attaches via a MagSafe connector.
Powertrain unknown
No information has been provided about the Mission S powertrain. Given the exhaust pipes at the rear, it is safe to assume an internal combustion engine. A flat-eight behind the cockpit is a good possibility, similar to the 908 race car or the engine recently shown by Ruf. Rumors that Porsche would build a flat-eight have circulated for a week.
Whether it will use forced induction or hybridization is unclear. Since Porsche recently developed its electric T-Hybrid system, the publication considers it reasonable to expect both.
