Political tensions between Poland and Ukraine have escalated sharply following public disagreements between the two countries' presidents. The dispute has led to the cancellation of the Ukraine Recovery Conference scheduled for this week in Gdańsk, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will not attend. The Ukrainian delegation will be led by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, while Polish President Karol Nawrocki has not been invited to the event. Additionally, a previously planned bilateral meeting in Warsaw has been canceled.
The tensions intensified after Nawrocki announced his intention to strip Zelenskyy of Poland's highest state decoration, the Order of the White Eagle. This decision came in response to Ukraine naming one of its military units after the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), whose actions during World War II remain controversial in Poland.
In response to criticism, Zelenskyy accused Nawrocki of stoking hatred against Ukrainians for political purposes. The Polish president countered that the dispute concerns historical memory, not domestic politics.
Experts believe that Poland's support for Ukraine in its war against Russia remains unaffected. Several Polish and Ukrainian media outlets have issued a joint statement urging against further deterioration of bilateral relations, warning that it could serve Russia's interests.
