Drunk tractor driver hauling straw trailer causes train collision in Poland
In Poland, an intoxicated tractor driver drove onto railway tracks between Subkowy and Gorki, causing a collision that damaged his straw-loaded trailer. None of the roughly 500 train passengers were seriously injured, though they had to switch to another train.
A dangerous incident occurred on a railway section between the towns of Subkowy and Gorki in Poland after a tractor driver acted with blatant disregard for safety. The man, who was under the influence of alcohol, drove onto a level crossing directly in the path of an oncoming train.
The train collided with the trailer attached to the tractor, which was fully loaded with bales of straw. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the crash.
Hundreds put at risk
Although a major tragedy was avoided, the driver's reckless behavior while driving under the influence directly endangered the lives of roughly 500 passengers aboard the train, as well as the train crew and other road users. The incident also disrupted the travel plans of hundreds of passengers. Those on the damaged train had to transfer to other services to continue their journeys.
A reminder about safety rules
Following the incident, railway representatives and experts once again stressed a fundamental rule: at every level crossing, the train always has the right of way. They noted that a heavy train can require a braking distance of up to a kilometer. This means that even if a driver spots danger in time and begins braking immediately, stopping the train instantly is impossible due to its enormous momentum.
