Police remind: cyclists under 17 must wear a helmet
Latvia's State Police is reminding cyclists and scooter users to follow safety rules, noting that helmets are mandatory for those under 17 and that a cycling permit is required from age 10 for independent riding.
As the popularity of micromobility devices such as bicycles and scooters keeps growing, the State Police is paying closer attention to how the most vulnerable road users comply with safety rules.
Most common violation
According to police observations, one of the most frequently recorded violations is riding a bicycle or scooter without a protective helmet. Wearing a helmet is mandatory for anyone under 17 years old.
Many parents unaware of permit rule
Police also point out that many parents are unaware of another important requirement: a child who rides a bicycle independently already needs a cycling permit starting from age 10.
The State Police is urging both parents and young riders themselves to take traffic safety requirements seriously in order to reduce risks on the roads.
