Hacker detained over cyberattacks on at least two Latvian companies
Latvian State Police detained a man born in 2003 on suspicion of carrying out cyberattacks for financial gain against at least two Latvian companies. Personal data was obtained in both attacks, but according to police information it was not passed on to third parties.
On September 15, Latvia's State Police detained a young man, born in 2003, on suspicion of orchestrating cyberattacks against at least two Latvian companies. In both cases, the apparent motive was financial gain.
Two attacks with a similar pattern
The first recorded cyberattack took place in February this year, targeting an unnamed Latvian company. A second incident bearing similar hallmarks was identified in early September, this time affecting "TSC," a household appliance and smart device repair company that is part of the LMT group of companies.
Police noted that the methods used in both attacks were similar, allowing investigators to link them to the same suspect.
Personal data obtained
In both cyberattacks, the perpetrator managed to obtain personal data. However, information available to police indicates that the stolen data was not passed on to third parties, which limits the potential harm to those affected.
The investigation into the cyberattacks is ongoing as police work to establish the full circumstances of the case.
