Nepal flood death toll passes 900 as search for over 4,700 missing continues

Rescue teams in Nepal and Tibet continued their search for survivors on Monday, days after devastating flash floods tore through communities along the shared border. The confirmed death toll has now passed 900, while more than 4,700 people remain unaccounted for.

A key focus of the ongoing operation is a hydroelectric plant, where rescuers believe workers may still be trapped inside flooded tunnels. Efforts to reach them were continuing as of Monday.

Aid reaches isolated communities

Nuwakot, one of the districts hit hardest by the flooding in Nepal, has seen entire communities cut off from road access. Helicopters have become the primary means of reaching these areas, delivering food, clothing and other essential supplies while also evacuating injured and stranded residents to safety.

Families wait for word in Kathmandu

In the capital, the walls of Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital have filled with posters showing the faces of the missing. Relatives are gathering there, holding onto hope for news of family members who were swept away when the floodwaters surged through their communities.

Authorities on both sides of the border are continuing search and rescue operations, though the full scale of the disaster's toll may not be known until access to cut-off areas improves.
