Five flooring mistakes that can add hundreds of euros to your renovation
Flooring consultants warn that common mistakes in choosing and installing floor coverings can drive up renovation costs by hundreds of euros. Often the problem isn't the material itself, but poor subfloor preparation, planning or budgeting.

Many people renovating their homes compare flooring options mainly by price per square metre, but this can be misleading. Flooring consultants say most mistakes only become visible after installation, when fixing them costs far more than any initial savings.
Price isn't the whole picture
The final cost of a finished floor includes not just the material but also subfloor preparation, levelling, underlay, adhesive, skirting boards and installation labour. For example, glue-down and click-type vinyl flooring have different subfloor requirements, so comparing their price per square metre alone is misleading.
Subfloor condition and room-specific needs
A new floor is only as good as the subfloor beneath it – an uneven or poorly prepared base can cause movement, noise or joint problems that later require partial removal of the flooring. Floor choice should also match how a room is actually used, since hallways, kitchens and children's rooms have different demands, and one solution doesn't necessarily suit every space.
Savings that can backfire
Underlay, adhesive and installation materials must meet technical requirements, especially in homes with underfloor heating. Cutting costs here can later force the removal of an already-installed, more expensive floor covering. Material quantities also need precise calculation, since running short at the end of a project means extra deliveries and possible colour differences in a new batch.
Specialists conclude that the biggest losses usually come not from choosing an expensive material, but from cutting costs in the wrong place. Before buying, it's worth assessing the subfloor's condition, how the room will be used, and the full installation cost.
