Most abortions in Latvia last year performed on women over 30
In 2025, 2,421 induced abortions were performed in Latvia, a figure roughly unchanged from the previous year, with women aged 30 to 39 accounting for the largest share. Meanwhile, births in Latvia fell by more than 7% compared to 2024.
According to data compiled by Latvia's Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, 2,421 induced abortions were performed on women in the country last year. That is 13 fewer than the year before, meaning the figure remained essentially stable.
Women aged 30 to 39 make up the largest share
The largest number of abortions — 562 — were carried out on women aged 30 to 34. A very similar figure was recorded for women aged 35 to 39, at 560 cases. The third-largest group was women aged 25 to 29, with 460 abortions.
The centre's data also show that, unlike in each of the previous five years, no abortions were performed last year on girls under the age of 14.
Birth rate continues to decline
Alongside the abortion statistics, figures on newborns were also released. Last year, 11,931 children were born in Latvia — 956 fewer, or 7.4% less, than in 2024. This confirms that the country's birth rate continues to decline.
