A lantern hike with educational elements, titled “Amber Walk” (“Dzintaru pastaiga”), will start at 5 p.m. on 30 October in Pāvilosta, in Latvia's South Kurzeme Municipality. Residents and visitors are invited to take an autumn-evening walk of about five kilometres along the Pāvilosta coast and learn more about amber. The event is organised by the South Kurzeme municipal agency “South Kurzeme Tourism Centre”.

What the hike involves

Participants will learn about the traditions of searching for, catching and scooping amber, which have long been part of coastal life. They will also hear local stories linked to Pāvilosta, the sea and amber. The programme includes a visit to the Pāvilosta local history museum and educational activities.

The hike will take place after dark, so participants will carry lanterns. UV light will let them see the coast differently and, possibly, notice things that are usually walked past on an everyday stroll. Organisers have a limited number of UV lanterns, so anyone needing one must say so in the registration form.

Practical information

The hike will start and finish at the Pāvilosta tourist information centre at 2 Dzintaru Street. Participants should wear clothing and footwear suited to the weather. Long rubber boots, a lantern, reflective elements and, if possible, a UV lantern are recommended.

No more than 50 people can take part. Registration is open until 28 October but may close earlier if all places are taken. More information on participation terms and registration is available on the website of the South Kurzeme tourism centre.
