In the French capital, Paris, a curfew has been extended in certain areas and will apply every night from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. until Monday morning. This is set out in an order from the Paris police prefecture, published on Thursday. According to the source, the measure has been in force since the violence and looting that took place over the weekend.

Student protest went ahead despite a ban

A student-organised demonstration also took place in Paris on Thursday. Police had initially banned it, but the ban was overturned by an emergency court injunction, so the event could go ahead. Hundreds of people attended.

The students behind the protest had already held four weeks of demonstrations before the rallies of October 17. The source does not say what the protests were about.

Interview with a student representative

For its coverage, the news channel FRANCE 24 spoke with Alice Cohen-Morzadec, International Spokesperson of the student organisation "L'Union étudiante", in an interview conducted by its correspondent Mark Owen. The source does not set out what she said.

The extended curfew applies only to certain areas of Paris rather than the whole city. The source does not name the specific districts affected.
