Tragedy in southwest Pakistan

At least 40 people were killed and eight others injured when a passenger bus lost control and fell into a deep ravine in southwestern Pakistan on Friday, according to officials.

The accident occurred in the mountainous Dana Sara area of Zhob district, near the border between Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces. Sanaullah Sherani, head of the Zhob district emergency centre, told AFP that the bus was traveling from Quetta to Peshawar when it plunged off the highway.

Shahid Rind, a spokesperson for the Balochistan government, confirmed the death toll of 40 to the Associated Press. He added that the bus was overcrowded and speeding at the time of the crash.

A rescue agency reported to Reuters that 48 passengers were on board, and that the bus was heading to the capital, Islamabad, though other officials described the route as Quetta to Peshawar.

Rescue teams are at the scene, working to assist the injured and recover bodies. This is a developing story.
