Oura Ring 5 vs. Apple Watch Series 12: Choosing the right health wearable

A new comparison shows the Oura Ring 5 and Apple Watch Series 12 track similar health data, but differ sharply in platform support, workout features and subscription costs. The right choice largely depends on your phone and lifestyle.

Health and fitness wearables have moved from niche gadgets to mainstream accessories, and smart rings are increasingly challenging traditional smartwatches. Starting at around $400, the Oura Ring 5 now competes directly with Apple's latest flagship, the Apple Watch Series 12.

Shared data, different approach

Both devices track largely the same health metrics — sleep, steps, estimated calorie burn, heart rate and heart rate variability, plus menstrual cycle tracking. Oura claims an edge in women's health by also offering insights on pregnancy and menopause. Both products also calculate a readiness score meant to indicate whether the body is primed for intense activity or needs rest.

The most obvious difference is the Series 12's touchscreen, offered in two sizes, which combined with more onboard storage and a new processor lets it handle tasks like payments and trail navigation without a paired phone nearby. Cellular versions can even work without Wi-Fi. The Oura ring, by contrast, always depends on a connected phone to display or manage data, and its web dashboard is being discontinued.

Platform and workout differences

Compatibility is another key factor: the Series 12 only works with iPhones, while the Oura ring also supports Android devices, making it effectively the only option between the two for non-iPhone users. For workouts, the Series 12 is far more capable, offering real-time stats, running cadence and precise GPS tracking that the ring cannot match on its own.

The Oura's main advantage is battery life, lasting up to nine days on a charge compared to the daily charging typically required for the Apple Watch.

Subscription costs

A major distinction lies in subscription fees. Unlocking the Oura Ring 5's full feature set — including continuous heart rate monitoring — requires a membership costing $6 per month or $70 per year, while Apple includes comparable features at no extra cost. Overall, iPhone owners are likely better served by the Series 12, while Android users will find the Oura ring the more practical pick.
