At the WTA 1000 tournament in Beijing, world No. 32 Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia faces Spain's second-ranked player Paula Badosa, currently No. 59, who has previously held the world No. 2 ranking, in this morning's second-round clash.

Ostapenko holds a 3-2 edge in their head-to-head record, including wins in each of their last two meetings, both of which went to three sets. This season Ostapenko has posted a 22-19 record, while Badosa's mark stands slightly better at 27-19.

Career highlights

Ostapenko's Grand Slam resume includes the French Open title from 2017 and a Wimbledon semifinal appearance in 2018. Badosa's best Grand Slam result came in 2025, when she reached the semifinals of the Australian Open.

The 29-year-old Ostapenko has won nine WTA titles during her career, including a clay-court final triumph at last April's Stuttgart WTA 500 event. The 28-year-old Badosa has four significant titles to her name.

This will be Ostapenko's seventh appearance at the Beijing tournament, where her best showing was a semifinal run in 2017. Badosa will be competing there for the fourth time, having also reached the semifinals once, in 2024.

Temperatures during the match are expected to be around 20 degrees Celsius. The winner of this encounter will face either Belgium's Elise Mertens, ranked 19th, or American Katie Volynets, ranked 74th, in the third round.
