OpenAI and Jony Ive’s first device rumored to be a puck-sized smart speaker

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has shared new details about the device OpenAI is developing with former Apple design chief Jony Ive. According to Gurman’s sources, the product is essentially a smart speaker without a screen. It is battery-powered, has a doughnut-like shape, and is roughly the size of a hockey puck.

The device is expected to arrive in 2027 with a price tag above $300. It will reportedly feature a distinctive design with moving parts, some of which will move on their own to indicate when the device is responding to or engaging with the user. It will also include lights, a camera system, and other sensors.

Because it runs on battery power, the gadget is said to be easy to carry around the home with one hand, similar to Amazon’s discontinued Tap speaker. In terms of functionality, it will resemble ChatGPT’s voice mode on smartphone apps, but with more advanced models designed for humanlike interaction.

Gurman notes that, despite the ongoing lawsuit between OpenAI and Apple, the device will not look or feel like an Apple product. It could be the first in a family of devices that OpenAI has in the works, and more details are likely to emerge long before the actual release.
