OpenAI reportedly in talks to raise $30B at $1.4T valuation

OpenAI is negotiating with investors to raise at least $30 billion at a roughly $1.4 trillion valuation ahead of its planned IPO, Bloomberg reported. The round would act as a bridge to the public listing, which CEO Sam Altman has now pushed back to prioritize AI safety.

OpenAI is in discussions with investors about raising at least $30 billion in a new funding round that would value the company at approximately $1.4 trillion, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday. Investors reportedly want to inject more capital into the ChatGPT maker before its expected entry into public markets.

Revenue growth

While rival Anthropic briefly pulled ahead of OpenAI earlier in the year, a strategic shift toward areas such as coding has driven strong growth. The company's run-rate revenue rose 70% since July, reaching $40 billion in August, according to the report.

Previous round and IPO timeline

OpenAI previously raised $122 billion in March at an $852 billion valuation. That round had been intended as the company's final private fundraise before an IPO, which until recently was expected to happen this year. However, CEO Sam Altman has now ruled out a public listing in 2026, choosing instead to prioritize AI safety.

Speaking to Fortune, Altman said he considers it unacceptable to accept roughly a 10% chance of AI killing everyone by the end of the decade, responding to warnings from safety researchers about the existential risks posed by artificial intelligence.

According to Bloomberg, the new funding round, if completed, would serve as a bridge to the eventual IPO. OpenAI did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment.
