Another OpenAI executive departs as Brad Lightcap heads for new venture

Brad Lightcap, who leads special projects at OpenAI and previously served as the company's chief operating officer, has announced his departure after eight years with the AI lab. He shared the news in an internal memo later posted to X, telling colleagues he would be starting "something new."

Lightcap said he had spent recent months focused on what he called the "next horizon" for the company and what might stand in the way of its mission. He added that he wanted to keep contributing to that mission from a different vantage point and would remain with the company for a few more weeks during the transition.

A role that kept shifting

Lightcap's responsibilities changed repeatedly over the past year and a half. In March 2025, his COO duties expanded to cover day-to-day operations, global deployment, business strategy, key partnerships and infrastructure. By January 2026, he had stepped back from leading the enterprise push on the product and engineering side, though he kept oversight of commercial functions — a role later taken over by Barret Zoph, who himself departed roughly five months afterward. In April, Lightcap formally stepped down as COO, moving into a role overseeing the company's "special projects" and reporting directly to CEO Sam Altman. Chief revenue officer Denise Dresser absorbed a large portion of his former duties.

Part of a broader leadership shuffle

Lightcap's exit follows several other high-profile departures at OpenAI in recent months. AGI chief Fidji Simo officially left in July after a period of medical leave, while chief marketing officer Kate Rouch stepped down in April for health reasons. The company has also been undergoing broader reorganization, with president Greg Brockman taking charge of the product side and OpenAI pledging to cut back on "side quests" in favor of its core revenue drivers as it prepares for a potential public listing over the coming year.
