OpenAI releases ChatGPT desktop app for Linux
OpenAI has launched a ChatGPT desktop app for Linux, completing its rollout across every major desktop operating system. The app is currently available in preview for several popular Linux distributions.
OpenAI announced on Tuesday the release of a dedicated ChatGPT desktop application for Linux, closing the gap for the last major desktop platform that lacked native support for the chatbot.
According to the company, Linux has long been among the most requested platforms for its desktop app, and this launch now brings both ChatGPT and Codex to every major desktop operating system.
Supported distributions
The new app, currently released in preview, allows Linux users to run ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex across a number of distributions. The rollout is worldwide and took effect on Tuesday.
OpenAI states that supported distributions include the desktop editions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. While the broader Linux ecosystem includes hundreds of distributions, the ones chosen by OpenAI serve as the foundation for many downstream variants, which are expected to be compatible with the new apps as well.
Trailing Anthropic
In this respect, OpenAI is trailing behind rival Anthropic, which released its own Claude desktop app for Linux roughly a month earlier. Anthropic's version supports Ubuntu 22.04 and later, as well as Debian 12 and later.
