OECD report: teacher shortage remains an issue in Latvia
A new OECD education report finds that the share of vacant teaching positions in Latvia has grown in recent years, as teachers age and young educators tend to leave the profession. A future decline in student numbers could ease demand for teachers, but would not fully solve the problem.
Latvia continues to face a teacher shortage, according to the latest international education review by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Latvian Television reports.
The report notes that Latvia's teaching workforce is aging, while young teachers often choose to leave the profession. As a result of these combined trends, the proportion of vacant teaching positions in the country has risen in recent years.
Outlook
The OECD review suggests that a future decrease in the number of schoolchildren could reduce overall demand for teachers. However, this demographic shift alone would not fully resolve the teacher shortage, since the problem is also linked to the profession's appeal and the retention of educators.
