Washington plans to urge Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to agree to hand Russia certain territories that it has so far failed to occupy. The US newspaper The New York Times (NYT) reports that the aim is to end Russia's war against Ukraine.
According to the paper, the proposal is being carried to Oslo, the Norwegian capital, by Steve Witkoff, the special envoy of US President Donald Trump. He is scheduled to meet Zelensky there on Tuesday, when the offer is expected to be presented.
Trump's position
The NYT reports that Trump is determined to push Ukraine into such a deal. Citing its information, the paper says the US president is trying to convince Zelensky that efforts to hold on to the parts of Donbas that Russia has already taken are not worth it. Donbas is an eastern Ukrainian region that has been one of the main battlegrounds of the war.
The source does not say how Zelensky or the Ukrainian leadership will respond to the proposal. The information is based on the NYT's reporting, and no confirmation from US or Ukrainian officials is cited.
