NVD report: 149 patients received rare disease medicines last year

Latvia's National Health Service (NVD) has published its public report for 2025, summarizing data on the availability and use of state-compensated medicines in the country.

According to the report, 149 patients received state-compensated medicines intended for the treatment of rare diseases last year. This relatively small number reflects the nature of rare diseases themselves, which occur less frequently among the population than other health conditions, meaning the group of patients requiring such specific therapies is limited.

Medicines compensated under the general procedure

At the same time, NVD data show that 760,047 patients received state-compensated medicines under the general procedure last year. This figure far exceeds the number of rare disease patients, illustrating how widely the state compensation system is used for treating more common health conditions.

Overall, the NVD's public report for 2025 offers insight into how state support for purchasing medicines is distributed among different patient groups — from widespread conditions to rare and specific diagnoses.
