An agent of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) shot a man on Thursday, 8 October, at about 4pm in the Marble Hill neighbourhood of the Bronx, New York City, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani. The incident matters because it has prompted a sharp response from city and state leaders over federal immigration enforcement in New York.

What is known

The mayor said early reports indicated that agents surrounded the man and a five-year-old child in his car before firing several rounds. According to Mamdani, the child was not physically harmed.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) said in a brief statement that the man who was shot was conscious and taken to hospital. Police also said they were not at the scene when the shooting happened. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which oversees ICE, had not immediately responded to an inquiry on Thursday evening.

The New York Times reported that witness video appeared to show several agents in the street afterwards, one of them armed and another restraining a man on the ground. The City Reporter, a local news outlet, said video showed chaos, with a crowd gathered and NYPD officers appearing to carry a man into the back of a vehicle.

Reaction from officials

In a post on X, Mamdani called the situation "unconscionable and incredibly serious". He said he had called the President and would demand that he end all ICE enforcement actions in the city. The mayor also said he was praying for the injured man's recovery.

Kathy Hochul, the Democratic governor of New York state, said she had been briefed on the shooting. She said authorities expect federal officials to provide a full and transparent account of the circumstances, adding that New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why.

The source said further details were expected.
