NovelKeys now sells its retro-style keyboard fully assembled
NovelKeys has launched a preassembled version of its Classic-TKL mechanical keyboard called the Underscore Edition, previously available only as a build-it-yourself kit.
NovelKeys has released a new version of its Classic-TKL mechanical keyboard, called the Underscore Edition, which for the first time comes fully assembled instead of requiring buyers to build it themselves from a kit.
Priced at $189, the wired tenkeyless keyboard features an injection-molded plastic case with a retro look reminiscent of the 18-year-old Realforce 86U, a silicone dampening mat on the base, hot-swappable MX switches, RGB backlighting, and full programmability through the Via web app.
The keyboard ships with NovelKeys' own Classic Blue switches, GMK CYL Classic Beige keycaps, a USB A-to-C cable, and preinstalled, pretuned TypePlus stabilizers. It's available in three colors: a warm beige, a taupe-like shade, and a dusty green.
NovelKeys owner Michael Sickler said the Underscore Edition targets both enthusiast customers who want something they can recommend to friends and family, and professionals who follow keyboard communities online but don't want to assemble a board themselves.
Building an equivalent DIY version with similar-quality parts previously cost around $276, making the new preassembled model a better deal despite costing $100 more than the bare kit. The keyboard lacks wireless connectivity and comes with only one switch and keycap option, though the market offers comparably priced alternatives with wireless features and different aesthetics.
