A 27-year-old woman, Aisha Zaman, has been charged after a police officer was shot in the foot in Nottingham, a city in central England, shortly before 04:50 BST on Sunday. Nottinghamshire Police are investigating the incident, which took place in the city centre.

What happened

According to the force, the male officer approached a man and a woman at a bus stop in Angel Row when he was shot. He remains in hospital, where he is receiving treatment.

Charges and arrests

Zaman, who lives on Collison Street in the Hyson Green area, has been charged with possession of a prohibited firearm and with possession of that firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence, meaning a serious crime that can be tried in a crown court. Police said the charge followed consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, the body that decides whether to prosecute criminal cases in England and Wales. She has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Several other people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Two men, aged 24 and 30, and two women, aged 25 and 21, were arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. A 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and of assisting an offender. Both remain in police custody.

Investigation

Det Ch Supt Rich Bull, who is leading the investigation, said the public's outpouring of support for the officer had been greatly appreciated and thanked people for it. He said the force continues to support the officer during his further treatment and is keeping him and his family fully informed of developments. Police are still following a number of lines of inquiry, and anyone with information has been asked to contact the force.
