Latvia's schools wrap up 'Signal Elections 2026' — Vidzeme and Latgale most active
An educational mock-election initiative called 'Signal Elections 2026' has concluded in Latvian schools, with 215 institutions and over 44,000 eligible young voters taking part.
Latvia has completed its 'Signal Elections 2026' initiative, a school-based project designed to build young people's understanding of democracy and the electoral process. A total of 215 educational institutions across the country took part, with the number of eligible young voters exceeding 44,000.
The information was shared by the association 'Eiropas Kustība Latvijā' (European Movement Latvia), which noted that only two Latvian municipalities did not participate this year: Ventspils County and Gulbene County. This means the vast majority of the country's local governments gave young people in their schools the chance to experience the voting process firsthand.
Most active regions
According to the association, the most active voters this year came from the Vidzeme and Latgale regions. Student engagement in these areas was reported to be higher than in other parts of Latvia.
'Signal Elections' is a format that allows young people — whether too young to vote in real elections or otherwise unfamiliar with the process — to gain practical experience with voting within their school environment. The initiative aims to foster an active and informed civil society from school age onward.
