A 45-year-old man has appeared in court in Norfolk accused of murdering his wife, a GP. Mark Cain was arrested and charged by police on Tuesday afternoon.

Found at home

Dr Hannah Cain, also 45, was found dead on Sunday 4 October at her home in Dersingham, close to the Sandringham estate. Her husband lives at the same address.

Prosecutor Jacqui Hanlon told the court that paramedics attended in the early hours of Sunday and found the woman in an upstairs bedroom, unconscious and not breathing. The ambulance service alerted police at 2:25am. The prosecutor said children were in the house at the time.

Court hearing

Mark Cain appeared before Norwich magistrates on Wednesday. He was not asked to enter a plea and was remanded in custody. District judge Matthew Bone said the case would be sent to King's Lynn crown court, where the defendant is due to appear on Thursday morning.

The doctor's work

Hannah Cain was listed as part of the practice team at Grimston medical centre, where she was known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry. According to the Sun, she belonged to a group of doctors regularly on call for members of the royal family living nearby.

The medical centre announced on Monday that it was temporarily closing, citing extremely difficult circumstances affecting its team. It apologised to patients for the disruption and asked for their understanding.

Norfolk police said on Tuesday that specialist officers were continuing to support Hannah's family, who have asked for privacy.
