A court in Latvia has sentenced Niks Endziņš to four years in prison, a case that had drawn media reports. He was taken into custody immediately after the verdict was read. The criminal case against him concerned the illegal acquisition and possession of narcotic substances in a large quantity with intent to sell. The verdict became publicly known when his partner, influencer Sindija Bokāne, confirmed it.

In a video on Facebook, Bokāne said the verdict had been read and that Endziņš had been detained and taken away. She said she was in shock: the two had planned to return home after the hearing, and at worst had considered that probation might be imposed.

Bokāne's statement

The influencer insisted that, in her view, Endziņš is innocent. She claimed he had not sold or distributed anything, called the accusation completely false, and said the whole family understands this and believes it. Bokāne noted that his legal struggle had lasted two years, while she had entered his life only in the past year. By her account, she, as well as Endziņš's parents, are deeply distressed.

In the video she voiced disappointment with the court's work. Comparing it with a recent case in which a police officer killed a teacher, she said that in Latvia a person is released after killing someone, while, in her view, a falsely accused person is deprived of freedom for four years.

Next steps

Bokāne said the couple would fight to the end and try to do everything possible to reduce the prison sentence. She expressed hope that a positive solution would be found. She described Endziņš as a warm, loving person who loves his family and dogs, and said he does not deserve prison.

The source does not say whether the verdict has been appealed.
