Nigerian Army Frees 33 Kidnap Victims in Zamfara State

Nigeria's military has announced the safe rescue of 33 people who were kidnapped by armed gunmen while travelling through the north-western Zamfara state on Saturday afternoon.

According to the army, troops and police launched a joint operation as soon as they learned of the abduction in the Tsafe area. Soldiers caught up with the kidnappers while they were in the process of relocating the hostages to an undisclosed location.

After troops opened fire on the group, the armed men abandoned their captives and escaped into nearby bushland. All 33 victims were recovered without injury, according to army spokesman Lt-Col Aliyu Danja.

A recurring threat in the region

Mass kidnappings for ransom are a persistent problem in north-western Nigeria, with major highways frequently targeted by armed groups.

Observers note that ransom payments — made by desperate relatives, negotiators, and at times by Nigerian authorities themselves — are widely seen as encouraging further abductions.

Lt-Col Danja said it remained unclear where the kidnappers had intended to take their hostages before troops intercepted them, and confirmed that the military is continuing efforts to track down the fleeing gunmen.
