Warmer Weather to Give Way to Cooler, Rainier Week in Latvia

Saturday will be the last mostly warm and dry day before a change in Latvia's weather. Forecasters say clouds will partly cover the sky, no rain is expected, and a gentle to moderate south-westerly wind will blow. Temperatures will reach +24..+29 degrees Celsius, making it the warmest day of the current stretch.

On Sunday, conditions will shift. Brief rain will appear in places, and the eastern region of Latgale may see thunderstorms. In Kurzeme, gusts from the south-west could strengthen to 15 metres per second. Maximum daytime temperatures will drop to between +19 and +25 degrees.

The following week will bring noticeably cooler weather. Most days temperatures will stay in the +18..+23 degree range, and at night the mercury may fall below +10 degrees in some areas. Winds will generally remain light, though westerly winds may pick up at times during the second half of the week. Precipitation will mostly fall as short showers, but locally heavy rain and thunderstorms remain possible.

Data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts indicates that next week's average temperature in Latvia will be one to two degrees below the climatological norm for this time of year. Total precipitation is forecast to be slightly higher than the usual August amount. In the final week of August, temperatures and rainfall are expected to return closer to long-term averages. Forecasters also expect the upcoming autumn to be warmer than usual in the region.
