NATO jets intercept drone over Latvia as Ukrainian strikes hit Russian Baltic port
Ukrainian drones caused a fire at Russia's Ust-Luga port and targeted Moscow and the Tver region overnight, while NATO fighter jets shot down a drone that entered Latvian airspace.
A Ukrainian drone assault triggered a blaze at the Ust-Luga port in Russia's Leningrad region, according to regional governor Alexander Drozdenko. Ust-Luga is Russia's second-largest port by volume, behind Novorossiysk, and the biggest on the Baltic Sea, ranking among Europe's five largest ports. Drozdenko later said the fire was put out and no one was hurt, adding that 54 drones were intercepted over the region during the attack.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that more than ten drones were flying toward the Russian capital. He said they were all shot down and caused no damage or injuries. In the Tver region, Ukrainian drones also struck, and acting governor Vitaly Korolev said debris from a downed drone damaged the wall of a Wildberries warehouse in the Kalininsky District. He stressed that no employees were injured.
Russia's Defense Ministry said its air-defense forces destroyed 553 Ukrainian drones overnight across 18 regions and Crimea.
Meanwhile, the Latvian National Armed Forces announced that NATO fighter jets had shot down a drone entering Latvian airspace during the same attack. The military said the drone crossed into Latvian territory because Russia used electronic warfare equipment. The incident highlights how the conflict continues to affect neighboring countries.
