Mycologist Kuulo Kalamees dies at 93
Kuulo Kalamees, an Estonian scientist and mycologist, died on Thursday, August 6, at the age of 93. He is remembered for his research on Estonian fungal communities and his advocacy for fungal conservation.
Kuulo Kalamees, a scientist and mycologist born in Tartu, passed away on Thursday, August 6, at the age of 93.
Kalamees worked at Tartu State University from 1964 to 1969, and from 1969 onwards at the Institute of Zoology and Botany. From 1992 to 1997 he served as Professor of Mycology, subsequently becoming an emeritus professor.
His work laid the foundation for studying fungal communities in Estonia and their productivity. He compiled identification guides for Estonian fungi and other books introducing mushrooms, while also promoting the protection of fungi.
From 1976 to 1985, Kalamees was president of the Estonian Society of Naturalists. In 2012, he was awarded the Order of the White Star, IV class, and in 2014 he received the University of Tartu Medal, presented to members for their long-term and significant contribution to the university’s development.
