Despite rising living costs, many Latvian households continue to overpay for electricity because they stick with their current provider. Ināra Rubene, Product Manager at "Ignitis Latvija", points out that people often live with myths that prevent them from saving money.

One common myth is that signing a contract is complicated. Rubene explains that today it can be done in a few clicks on the company's website or mobile app. The system automatically retrieves necessary information from the distribution network operator "Sadales tīkls", and the customer only needs to confirm the chosen tariff.

Another myth is that the customer must personally go to the previous supplier to cancel the contract. In reality, everything happens automatically through the "Sadales tīkls" system. There is no need to change wires or meters – they belong to the distribution operator.

The third myth is that green energy is expensive. Rubene notes that Latvia produces enough renewable energy, and green certificates do not increase the price. Green electricity is competitive for both small and large consumers.

Rubene emphasizes that consumers should evaluate not just the electricity price but the total monthly payment. Some suppliers offer low unit prices but high monthly fixed fees (up to 4 euros), which hurt small consumers. For larger consumers, switching to a provider offering personalized tariffs can save tens of euros per month.

Regarding contract penalties, if a customer has just signed a contract, the penalty can be recouped within a few months. For example, a consumer paying 300-400 euros per month could save about 50 euros at "Ignitis", so the penalty is quickly recovered.
