Mercedes-AMG, the performance brand of German carmaker Mercedes-Benz, has unveiled the 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV, an all-electric full-size SUV. It is the first time in AMG's 59-year history that it has built such a vehicle entirely in-house and from the ground up. The car is scheduled to reach the US next summer, and official pricing has not been announced yet.

The model rides on AMG's AMG.EA electric-vehicle architecture and aims to combine sports-car handling with the practicality of a large family SUV. It is related to the AMG GT four-door coupe presented earlier this year, and shares that car's three axial flux motors.

Power and charging

There will be three trims: GT 53, GT 55 and the flagship GT 63. The most powerful version produces 1,153hp, which, according to The Verge, beats the Porsche Cayenne Turbo Electric with Launch Control.

The SUV uses an 800-volt system. Charging speeds reach up to 710kW with the 128kWh battery (GT 63 and GT 55) and 600kW with the 106kWh battery (GT 53). A 10–80 percent charge takes 12 minutes, while 10 minutes adds up to 450km of WLTP range. The versions with the larger battery have an estimated maximum range of 435 miles. The battery uses Formula 1-inspired technology: NCMA cathodes, silicon-containing anodes and cylindrical cells, each surrounded by flowing electrically nonconductive oil.

Handling, sound and technology

Instead of traditional mechanical roll bars, the car has a new suspension with active hydraulic elements that reduce pitch and roll during acceleration, braking and cornering. It is complemented by three-stage air springs and standard rear-axle steering of up to six degrees. The GT 63 weighs 5,941lbs (about 2,695kg), slightly less than the Lotus Eletre R and the Lucid Gravity.

Inside is a 14-inch display running the MB.OS software, with AI assistants from ChatGPT, Microsoft and Google. The Predictive Performance Manager uses track-mapping data to adjust motor output and conserve battery energy, so full power is available on climbs and long straights. The sound system plays recordings of real AMG V8 and six-cylinder engines, simulates gear shifts and adds seat vibrations.
