Mexico City saw the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 11, as Mexico faced South Africa under heavy security following clashes between police and protesters near the venue. Demonstrators from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and other groups marched to the stadium, arguing that government funds spent on the tournament should address social issues instead.

As thousands of fans headed to the stadium, protesters attempted to move barricades and push through police lines, leading to confrontations around access routes. Riot police formed defensive cordons and prevented demonstrators from reaching fan zones. Some protesters threw stones and debris, while officers responded with crowd-control measures. Banners criticized World Cup spending and highlighted concerns over inequality and unresolved disappearances in Mexico.

Smoke and flares were visible near parts of the stadium perimeter, but authorities maintained control of the security zone. Despite the unrest, organizers confirmed the opening match proceeded as scheduled, allowing the tournament to begin before thousands of spectators in the Mexican capital.
