Marine Le Pen, leader of France's far-right National Rally (RN) party, faces a pivotal ruling on Tuesday, July 7, from the Paris Court of Appeal in a case concerning the misuse of European Parliament funds. The outcome will decide whether she can stand as a candidate in the 2027 French presidential election.

The case involves allegations that Le Pen and other party members improperly used EU parliament funds earmarked for parliamentary assistants to pay party staff in France instead. In 2024, Le Pen was convicted of these charges and sentenced to four years in prison (partly suspended) and a five-year ban from holding public office, which would effectively prevent her from running in 2027. However, she appealed the verdict.

Tuesday's appellate ruling could uphold the original sentence, modify the penalty, or acquit her entirely. If the ban remains in place, Le Pen would be unable to participate in the next presidential race, dealing a severe blow to her political ambitions. She has twice reached the runoff (in 2017 and 2022), losing both times to Emmanuel Macron.

The court's decision is highly anticipated as it could reshape the French political landscape ahead of the 2027 election. Le Pen has consistently denied wrongdoing, claiming the case is politically motivated.
