MapQuest app now shows where surveillance cameras are located
The US mapping service MapQuest has added a layer to its app that displays known outdoor surveillance cameras and license plate readers, including Flock cameras. The feature lets residents see how widespread such cameras are in their area.

MapQuest, the US mapping service, has introduced a new feature in its app: users can switch on a layer that shows known outdoor surveillance cameras and license plate readers on the map. The layer also marks the locations of Flock cameras, a brand of surveillance system.
Beyond Flock, the layer displays cameras from several other companies, including Motorola Solutions (Vigilant), Genetec, Axis Communications, Axon, Leonardo (ELSAG), Neology, Rekor, PlateSmart, Ubicquia and Verkada. The option sits next to the traffic and incidents views, so it should be easy to find in the app.
Why it matters
Engadget notes that these cameras may be hard to avoid on a commute or other usual routes, but the layer can help show how pervasive they are in a given area. The information may also be useful to residents who are trying to get surveillance cameras removed from their neighborhoods.
Background
MapQuest has seen an unexpected surge in popularity in recent months. The app drew attention after it declined to call Lake Ontario "Lake America," unlike Google Maps and Apple Maps. The service has also added Android Auto support and public transit directions.
MapQuest announced the new feature with a short video set to Rockwell's song "Somebody's Watching Me."
