Mamdani: Our victory carries a national message

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani says the primary wins of his endorsed democratic socialist allies send a national signal about the need for politics that serve working Americans.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Sunday that he and a slate of democratic socialist allies who won recent primary elections are carrying a “national message” to struggling working-class Americans.

Speaking on ABC News’ “This Week,” Mamdani made the declaration just five days after his endorsed candidates secured Democratic nominations in three New York congressional races and five state legislature seats in Albany. He did not hide his delight, calling the clean sweep a dramatic shift in Democratic politics not only in New York City but across the United States.

“We are bringing a New Deal understanding of Democratic politics to Congress and onto the national stage,” Mamdani said. He argued that the message does not need to be nationalized because it already is national—reflecting a national crisis of Americans exhausted by daily struggles to make ends meet.

Mamdani’s framing poses a direct challenge to the established Democratic leadership. Moderate Democrats like Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut predicted the effort to nationalize New York would fail. Fifteen self-identified moderate House Democrats signed an open letter stating, “We are capitalist, not socialist.” Mamdani responded with a joke: “Sounds pretty socialist to me.”

In response to criticism, Mamdani pointed to concrete achievements. On Thursday, New York’s rent guidelines board voted to freeze rents for about one million apartments. The city also introduced free childcare for two-year-olds for the first time in its history and repaired 165,000 potholes.

“We’ve shown that democratic socialism is pragmatic—because if we cannot deliver for working people, then what is it for?” Mamdani said.

He sharply criticized party leadership for failing to present a positive vision and relying solely on opposition to President Donald Trump. “You have to have something you are not just willing to stand up for, but also explain how it is relevant to working people,” he said.

In the primaries, Mamdani’s allies defeated two incumbent Democrats: Brad Lander beat Dan Goldman, and Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated Adriano Espaillat. Claire Valdez also won her primary against Antonio Reynoso.

Some Democrats are spooked, while others, like Senator Chris Murphy, urge openness—acknowledging that capitalism has not worked for many. Senator Raphael Warnock voiced concern for ordinary people who cannot afford their lives, saying both parties have failed to respond adequately to the deepening crisis.
